1. What if when I run Ferret32, the window is too Large?

Setting the Default in FERRET32'S ini file will re-size the window. However, Ferret32 does not readily support screens smaller than 640 x 480. Minimum screen size recommended is 800 x 600. Larger is much better.

2. What if when I run Ferret32, the top line and Controls are hidden under my MS OFFICE ToolBar?
You may set up MSOFFICE ToolBar to Auto-hide or simply minimize the ToolBar. Alternatively, you can edit FERRET'S ini file to define Top and Left of Ferret32's form's load. When setting these values, set them in pairs. Close and save the INI file, then run Ferret32 a new.

3. How to I get support and questions answered about Ferret32 ?
Address questions via EMAIL to:
salkow@bychoice.com
Support is provided only to registered users.

4. Is there a environment setting requirement for AUTOEXEC.BAT or WIN NT Environment ?
None required if Ferret32 is run from where it was installed. For more on Ferret32 administration, setup, power application, htm browsing, and Temp file locations, see our Web Pages.

5. Can I avoid having to re-register if I upgrade Ferret software.
No, a new registration is not required.

6. Can I install Ferret32 over a previous version?
You can but it is NOT RECOMMENDED for a number of reasons.
a.) Pre-existing files can be over-written including your old FERRET.INI file. You may wish to save this as a reference to you former file location(S) settings.
To avoid having to re-define all your file locations, save the file:   ferret.ini to a separate directory. After the re-installation, over-write the ferret.ini with your saved version
To avoid having to run the register menu screens, save the file:   validate.bin.
After the re-installation, over-write the validate.bin with your saved version
b.) Ferret32 install will not replace files equal to the current version. These files could be damaged and the installation would then not fix the problem.>

7. Is there any System Software Upgrades required to run Ferret32?
When installing the software, if you notice missing modules, or the software setup program does not even run, you are missing part of your operating system which has either been removed, damaged or over-written. New programs also load new DLLs and OCX files that may be newer than the one provided with Ferret32. This is OK and is quite normal. When prompted to keep the newer version already on your system you should answer YES.

Microsoft® Internet Explorer often uses many features in their desktop software. By the download of a later upgrade of this program, you may update or fix system missing file or corrupt file problems. However, a word of caution. These files are very large and may take a very long time to download on a slow modem.

(We do not support Windows 95, Win 98, Win NT 4 or earlier any longer even though they may be functional.)

7.  When I run the program Ferret32, I get a Temp file missing error.

Ferret32 needs to have a temp file directory. The installation proceedure suggested that you use C:\temp or use the temp directory defined by your system. Click here for more on Temp Files.

8. Drag/Drop Operations on RUN don't function.

You are running a down rev version of Ferret32. A RUN button has replaced Drag/Drop to run operations. Please download and install the latest software. Your registration number is valid for version 3s.

9. Can I change the end of record delimiter?

Yes the End of Record delimiter may be customized under Options - endings.Click Here for more help on setting Record delimiter. On version 3.9.41, keyboard shortcut Control E keyboard will call Endings.

10. Can Ferret32 be made to run a specific commands or program from within its GUI?

Yes. Highlighted text in the search results window may be executed using the RUN button. Ferret32 has an intelligent parser, and based on the content of the string, will attempt to determine if the text is one on the following:

  • an email address
  • a valid file name or program
  • a URL address
  • a Dos like construct (like cmd /c argument as in "cmd /c xcopy c:\temp\*.* d:\temp\*.* /s/y/d/i/v")

11. I am looking for a piece of 3rd party software that can access set of records in a SQL database, scan 2 or 3 fields on each record and compare it to a list of keywords (ie. camping, fast food, exercise, etc.) and output to another SQL db whether or not words in that list apply to an individual record and, if so, which ones. It doesn't have to be dynamic, once a day processing is fine, but it has to be scriptable so it can be launched by a scheduler (ie. CRON). Can your product do that?

Ferret32 operates on Comma Delimited files, text, prose, and records. "Stuff found" is outputted to a file temp.fer in the application directory.
To run at a prescribed time, under Win NT or Win 2000 use the WIN AT.EXE: Command Scheduler to launch at batch file or cmd line. Ferret32 does not care what field data is in, if its:

  • a single line of text
  • a single comma delimited record
  • a single sentence
  • a single record delimited by a specified record delimiter

while searching in anyof those modes.

12. I use Ferret32 with Netscape because I use Netscape for my Email. Some Web Sites don't seem to work with Netscape what can I do?

Your workstation can be installed for both Netscape and Internet Explorer or any number of other nrowsers. It a good idea to keep these program fairly current. It is also a good idea to download the installation files over-night, especially if you have a slow internet connection. Click Netscapes Download page or
Microsoft Internet Products Download
(The built-in Browser in Ferret32 leverages Microsoft Internet Explorer.)

13. The screen colors appear strange or do not work well with 16 colors. What can I do?

FERRET32 requires a minimum of 256K colors and more is much better. This may only involve changing the setting for your screen. Since the amount of memory on an interface card is limited, increasing either the number of colors or the screen size may require a card with more memory. The Minimum screen size recommended is 800 x 600. Larger is much better.

New installs require true color.

The original specification for rich edit controls is Rich Edit 1.0; the current specification is Rich Edit 3.0. Each version of rich edit is a superset of the preceding one.
(We do not support Windows 95 or Win 98 any longer.)

Microsoft® Windows NT® version 4.0 includes Rich Edit 1.0 and 2.0. Microsoft Windows® 2000 includes Rich Edit 3.0 with a Rich Edit 1.0 emulator.

Windows 98 includes Rich Edit 1.0 and 2.0.

Windows 95 includes only Rich Edit 1.0. However, Riched20.dll is compatible with Windows 95 and may be installed if an application that uses Rich Edit 2.0 has been installed.
