Your WEB Browser creates very useful bookmark files. Adding and favorite or saving a URL addreess by bookmarking creates a list of important web sites for later reference. Once this bookmark file reaches more than 100 entries, finding a particular Web Address can become time consuming. The more places you add the worst it gets. To make the bookmark files orderly, users had to spend a lot of time filing bookmarks according categories so later, users could look in a single folder for an item. But what if the folder has 500 entries or you have five hundred folders? The task then becomes exceptionally tedious.
Many limit the number of bookmarks just because they have the hard to find syndrome!
Fortunately, most bookmarks have text associated with the entry. Bookmark files of even 1,000,000 links are searched in seconds for any matching criteria. The drudgery of sorting things by category or alphabetically is not necessary and a total waste of time. How do we make it happen. First point to your bookmark file. This file for NETSCAPE is BOOKMARK.HTM and is in a subdirectory under NETSCAPE. Once the SOURCE_FILE points to a file having a HTM file extension, then FERRET is enable for BROWSING HTML BOOKMARKS. Double clicking on or near a http link will find the nearest link and bring up a launch Browse window. Clicking on the Browse button will launch the browser to the http address shown. It will be necessary to define your path to your browser as Ferret32 need to know about your browser. Use OPTION menu to define the Web Browser. Since we all spend considerable time on the WEB, there are examples and more techniques on Ferret32 and web applications on these WEB PAGES. Note: Internet Explorer Users: Favorite files are handled a bit differently and our not, initially, in a searchable format. You may wish to consider downloading the free NETSCAPE NAVIGATOR software from http://www.netscape.com By using Netscape, you do not have to export favorites but rather may search bookmarks directly as the are created. .See for Exporting Favorites Using Internet Explorer 5 Export Wizard. Your computer is able to handle many tasks at the same time. This is a very powerful feature. Ferret32 takes advantage of this in many ways. One of these ways is in the "broadcasting" of web searching. Several search engines are called at the same time. This creates multiple browser windows. To get from one window to the next, we recommend using the <Alt>-Tab key.
Hold down the <Alt> key and while keeping the <Alt> key down, strike and release the Tab key. A box, much like this one, appears. In the box shown, the current task is partially described in the rectangular box under the Icons of the task currently running. <Alt>-Tabbing will move one task to the right each time the key-combination is struck. Releasing the <Alt> key on the task with the box outlined brings this task to the front. (Top) RENAMING SELECTED FILES(Top)A set of files to be renamed are selected in the search results window. The click the RENAME button. All the files are renamed according to the selected option(s) you specify. It is often highly useful to have files sequentially ordered as in pic01.gif, pic02.gif, etc. A word of caution: Renaming can alter the ability of the operating system to recognise the type of file or may overwrite all selected files to a single file name. A very powerful tool but backups may want to be created before this operation is run. REDATE SELECTED FILES (TOUCH the date to today)(Top)A set of files to be redated to NOW are selected in the search results window. The click the TOUCH button. All the files are redated to today.
